Books for Children:
a haphazard, annotated list of books that I found inspiring for one reason or another
This book explains why I became a Librarian. The boy in the story realizes that there is a group of librarians who are helpful, polite, caring and most important of all: curious about everything he is involved with. I'm not 100% enthused about Mr. Sneed's illustrations, but they do convey the mood and emphasize the message.
I'm just catching up with Mem Fox. Wonderful stories! And this one has sheep. What more could you want?Bear's Picture. Daniel Pinkwater. Illustrated by D.B. Johnson. Boston. Houghton Mifflin. 2008
Everybody knows bears don't paint. Except Bear. This brief story is an antidote to artists (of any age) to the inept "feedback" or brutal criticism that teachers, parents, critics, peers might offer.
Fartiste: an explosively funny mostly true story. Kathleen Krull and Paul Brewer. Illustrated by Boris Kulikov. New York. Simon & Schuster. 2008 Wikipedia article
Gingerbread Friends. Jan Brett. G. P. Putnams' & Sons/Penguin. 2008.
How I learned Geography. Uri Shulevitz. New York, Farrar Straus Giroux, 2008
When Shulevitz was a child, his family excaped Poland with only their lives and spirit. For 8 years they lived in Turkestan, then part of the Soviet Union. Then they lived in Paris for 2 years, followed by 10 years in Israel, at which time Uri came to the United States. One night rather than bread, his father brought home a map. It wasn't till much later that he realized the gift of curiosity, and cultural hunger his father had given him.

I hope all our politicians, priviledged or not, develop equivalent intellectual curiosity and that children will learn to care about people in different places with different customs.
