Things I do that keep me from painting: the silent dialogue in my head.

Nemesis: What makes you think you deserve to do something you want to do?

Me: Uh, I dunno. I'd like to paint.

Nemesis: Have you done all your (fill in the blank): homework, paperwork, housework, cleaning, chores?

Me: Uh, the list is endless. There's no way I'll have it all done. Besides the light's good now.

Nemesis: You don't want me mad at you, do you?

Me: Uh, not really, but it seems you are always mad at me.

Nemesis: What's that?

Me: Uh, nothing. I just wanted to paint for a couple of hours..

Nemesis: You think you can get anything decent done in that amount of time? Why it takes years to become a great painter.

Me: I just want to paint NOW.

Nemesis: Are you ignoring my superior wisdom?

Me: Well....

Nemesis: So what's your plan?

Me: Well, I guess I should go clean the kitchen. Or maybe make sure the bills are paid. I really wanted to paint. I'd even be happy to knit.

Nemesis: (Silent)

Me: But that's not chores. Actually, I think I'll read this magazine. I'll show you! No chores today. So there.

Nemesis to herself: Ha! She thinks she won that battle, but guess who still isn't painting. Or knitting.

oh.my.gosh, I totally thought I was the only person that does that. I won't allow myself to do anything I want to until everything I need to do is done.

This made me laugh, but then it made me sad.

I think you need to negotiate with the nemisis. ONE "productive thing" a day... like just cleaning up the dishes in the sink... and then you get a pass to do whatever you want.

This may also sound lame, but I've found that if I clean/do bills/ect in the morning before I'm totally awake, it helps.

Does your nemesis / voice in your head have a different voice than yours? Sometimes mine is Valentine Dyall, others it's Dr. Henry Killinger (and his magic murder bag.)

Thanks y'all. I still haven't gotten rid of Ms. Nemisis. But feedback helps and there is strength in numbers!
