It is still hot.
As usual, our first quest after finding food, was to look for books. I saw signed first editions by Kinky Friedman (who I hope will be the next governor of Texas), Madeleine L'Engle, Janet Evanovitch, Robert and B. Parker at this shop in McKinney, TX. They look awesome in clear bookjackets..

The SF book DH wanted wasn't in the store.

Texas towns, especially once you get away from the Courthouse Square, don't have all THAT much charm. There are hubcap "stores," taquerias, used car lots, strip shopping centers with dollar stores, car part suppliers and nail salons. And concrete.

Even the cow birds and grackles were standing still, wings lifted and beaks open, hoping for a breeze.

I did like this colorful banner, and wished the meat supplier had had their neon sign turned on.

In spite of the drought and heat, quite a few private farms had hay bales in their fields. I'm not sure whether they put netting on the outsides of them, like plastic wrap, but the way they shine is more interesting the the rectangular solids I was used to in my California childhood.

If it isn't cranes, it's caterpillars. Or Deeres. Even with the umbrella, I'm glad I don't have to be grading in this tract of land. Now that this East-West highway connects, there is lots of construction. There's already a Super Target, a pizzaria, a Cinemax and a church whose "brand" I've never heard of. I worry about bird and bunny habitat.

I worry about bird and bunny habitat as well. Prairie flowers, too. Mass consumerisn will be the death of many.

Been thinking of you down there in all that heat. It has cooled down here nicely so I'll go outside and blow south.

Hot hot hot indeed...let's hope for some rain to re-pack the dust and slake all the thristy critters' throats.
