Here are two sketch pen and pencil pieces I did this week. The pale yellow rose was way past its prime. I had never looked at how the petals curled backwards on themselves. Nor had I really SEEN the difference in the stem when it is in the water and out.
For some reason, I prefer the one on the left. The composition seems to break lots of standard rulse, and so I am at a lost as to understanding "why." Maybe I prefer the better balance of ink and pencil.
The one on the right was actually more "accurate" in many respects, but I am not happy with the wishy washy style of the shading.
Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

I like the crisp dark lines of the rose facing left. Don't let reality interfere with your creativity :-)
The second rose bloom looks good, but the contrast between it's soft, blurry shading and the crisp lines of the rest of the picture make the whole thing feel...not right.
I love your pictures. I wish I could draw or paint!
I like the top drawing best...the detail on the rose is striking. But...I like the treatment of the stem in the glass on the bottom one. You know, it's hard when you give us a choice, because they are both really charming...just different!
HI, I like the perspective of the one on the right best, but I think you are right, it might need some darker contrasts within the rose. Love the baby blanket, it turned out really nice. Maybe when the weather gets colder, your site will be enough to make me get out my knitting needles. Maybe.
My dad used to teach me that the first step in drawing was seeing. Many people only draw what they think they see, without really looking. Your drawings are appealing because you are seeing what is there.
