Gallimaufry, originally meaning "a hash of various kinds of meats," comes from French galimafrée, from Old French, from galer, "to rejoice, to make merry" (source of English gala) + mafrer, "to eat much," from Medieval Dutch maffelen, "to open one's mouth wide."
I. After accidentally painting a sketch that looked like Bethany Beach (DE), I found some reference photographs, made some thumbnails and asked my instructor to help me paint something that would remind me of a great week I had there with DD.
My instructor was mostly excited about helping me learn about painting clouds. So I also found some reference photographs of clouds and cobbled together a more elaborate thumbnail. I can see now that I need to make the dunes more irregular!II. Who new that Payne's Gray + Gold Ocher = a nice soft gray green?
III. This is a reference photo for the grasses. I have no idea where this photograph was taken. The art teacher has an amazing library of books on nature, people, and painters.IV. Go look at the works of Bette Ridgeway, for example!!
IV. DH and I went to the bookstore. Again.I'm behind the curve apparently. Daniel Pink (not to be confused with Daniel Pinkwater!!) wrote a business best-seller called Free Agent Nation (touted by Wired, Thomas Friedman, Peter Senge and many others) and is now exploring the evolution of business away from L-directed thinkers (programmers, lawyers, engineers, accountants and MBA's) to R-directed thinkers.
Because it is so easy and economical to outsource L-directed tasks (or use a computer), he says the premium skills, which can NOT be outsourced are:
- Design
- Story
- Symphony
- Empathy
- Play
- Meaning
Whee: Just my cup of tea!
IV: Not sure which Presidential Candidate has views most like yours?
This website has a 14 question poll that will identify him (or her) for you.
Yup: DK would be my guy... if he were still in the race. No wonder, we almost have the same birthday!!
VI. It was wonderful to have a day where I could meet a colleague for lunch and then a friend for coffee. AND run into 50% off sale at my local art store.
Last time I was there I got a "system" for rinsing my brush that is awesome.
A very good day. Hope yours was, too.
