Families ARE pretty interesting.
DH and I flew here from home on Friday.
Dear MIL fell and broke her hip Monday. Surgery Tuesday. Passed out from low blood pressure Friday which frightened #1 daughter VERY much. #1 tends to be a bit on the dramatic side, but she also watched her husband suffer and die of a massive heart attach about 20 years ago. #2 daughter is a former RN and is valiantly trying to make sure that medical staff does everything right... #3 child/#1 son (DH) is working at maintaining perspective. I, as a "mental health professional" am viewed with suspicion AND hope. FIL is cranky at best (and always has been), mean and mean spirited at worst. He also tends to suck all the air out of a room.
As the daughters feel their fear of Mom's demise (which is apparently neither imminent nor likely... but definitely more "real" than before)all sort of secrets are escaping, events being re-evaluated, wounds being lanced.
It's a challenge.
Wishing YOU well in your journey to understand your family's relationships.

Wasn't many months ago I was watching over my mother in the same circumstances. As a "sister" I'd like to thank DH for going and being present. So often the burden of decision making falls to the girls. Hope Mom is doing well and that the family is handling things with perspective. Your parents mortality is a harsh reality to come to terms with.
