Illustration Friday - Blue

It took me a while to think of what I wanted portray for this week's topic. I didn't want to do anything sad this close to Christmas... (or this close to finishing my cancer treatments). What came to mind first was the aqua "cocoa" pot that belonged to my mother's family. She was more of a Scotch drinker than cocoa fan, but I always loved the intense soothing color and the unusual shape. As you can see, creamer still exists, but the sugar bowl bit the dust somewhere along the line.

The tea pot belonged to my father's mother and was used almost every time we went to her house. She was proud of her English roots and never acquired much of a taste for coffee. (Or Scotch for that matter!) I think she bought it, or received it as a gift when she was working for an Asian importer in Los Angeles in the 1920's. It is a wonderful cobalt color with gold cherry blossoms painted in an all-over pattern.

In order to add "artistic" value I did layers and layers and filters with photoshop. I find faults with both illustrations... and would love to know what you find as strengths and liabilities.

If nothing else, go have a hot drink!

PS: The first respondent (who couldn't post ON blogger, but sent me an email) much preferred the top piece. The next two liked the bottom one.... (So I'm glad I didn't re-do it based on one person's opinion....) But it's fascinating to me that people have such strong and DIVERGENT opinions. State your preferences!!

Scotch and Coca go well together... I like the second picture better, it looks like something that was fired inside of a kiln, that a lot of care was put into sculpting.

I like the bottom one the best, in terms of color and composition. That blue is outstanding, and the closeup allows me to see the textures you've created in photoshop. It has such a wonderful balance of color and shape...very simple, but very pleasing. I also want to wish you the very best for a full recovery and return to health along with a happy holiday!

I like them both, actually.

Lovely stuff! I put dark rum in my cocoa!

I like the texture of the teapot in the second pic. It feels as if I could feel the patterns on them with my hands...

Best wishes to you and take care:-)

They are both very pretty. I like the lower one best, I think because it looks more like a painting. Great job with the layers. I need to learn how to do that.

Felicitous fornication

but only if sorely provoked.

my other phrase would be "male bovine feces"

it pays to have a rich vocabulary

Let me try Blogger comments again. I like the top one better--good balance and movement in the triangular composition. The two teapots almost look like they are dancing with each other! The colors are great. The viewpoint (looking down and at an angle) is interesting. All these things make me want to look at it again and again and again. To me the second one is flat and boring, nothing interesting going on there.

I love the second one. It looks like the teapot is glowing.

I like them both, but if forced to choose, I would pick the bottom one; I like the level of detial and texture a bit better on that one. They're both excellent though.

I see strengths in both, but I'd have to choose the top one.
The shapes are more interesting and one's eye has more places to go. Also, the background texture is more interesting. The complementary colors of the warm shades bring out the coolness of the blues. The only problem I have with the top one is that there's no focal point. My eye goes around in a circle and lands briefly on the white ring of the teapot, then to the top of the coffeepot, then inside the creamer ... but it wanders. The bottom one has blue colors that are very appealing, but I can't get lost in it as much as I can in the top one. I think it was a good choice (top) to have the spouts facing each other, almost like elephants conversing.
I'd like to see you paint this, too. Well, that's probably more feedback than you wanted, but I wanted to give it a thoughtful response, since you asked.

Thanks for your comment about vibrant frosting colours. Doesn't everybody do a pantone match with something textiley when making cupcakes?

I agree with Krista -- I like the bottom one because of the light treatment, and because it's so textural

I prefer the bottom one colourwise, I like the composition of the top one. I think I would like to own the blue tea pot!

I think they're both really wonderful and nice.

I like the greater three dimensionality of the bottom pot, though the colors are nice in the first one.

Hi. Cheers for your comments. The screenprint was done about 3 years ago, I've been drawing those flying things for a while before that. The cartoon type is my main thing at the moment but everything is shifting in my head, I've been dormant on the creative front on and off but gradually getting back in there. I like the top print best regarding your work here, bit more dynamic. The colours are great. I'll keep an eye out for your stuff. Gorra dash. :d
