Illustration Friday - Free

I.

I'm not sure that Iraqis, the present administration in DC or certain religious sects believe it, but I believe that knowledge is power, and that accurate, extensive knowledge gives one the most power... especially over self and one's circumstances. One does best when one has the appropriate FACTS first. Opinions, debating tactics and faith only prevail when they are based on reality rather than fiction and fantasy.

Support your local library, for it offers almost all knowledge without any investment other than your time. Seek truth!

II.

Both of these were seriously manipulated in photoshop! The first photograph was one of many "Carnegie Libraries" that showed up in Google's image search.
The seagull was a friendly companion when in Olgunquit, Maine.

Does anyone else feel "lazy" not doing a sketch and starting from scratch... Does anyone else rationalize that since this is Illustration Friday, rather than "painting" Friday, it's OK to work digitally and from a photograph?. It's not like it took less time!!

I really like your intepretation of Free and have to say I agree with your concepts regarding the knowledge required to find truth.
P.s. thanks for visiting me, I hope you'll pop back some time.

Funny - BF & I were talking about that whole idea of knowledge and being open-minded last night, so your post is like an addendum to our conversation. I think it's ok to manipulate stuff...soemtimes it's just too much to start from scratch (even though it's true that playing around with photoshop gets pretty time consuming as well). Anyway, I like what you've done here!

I think it's a different kind of creativity to use something as a launching pad rather than starting from a blank page. It's really more about YOUR process and ability to convey your message (which it sounds like are both 'good'). :)

Wonderful illos. Manipulating images is just as much of a creative challenge as drawing something from scratch. The end result is communication--which is what art is about.

Great job. Love the concept that knowledge is necessary in order to be free and find the truth.

They are both beautiful. I especially love what you did with the library photo. I think creativity can use any tools. If it's original and comes from your brain than its art in my book.
I love libraries, just picked up some Ian McEwan books today at the local university library.

Agree totally with the message and really like the choice of colors here. The libraries in my city have been threatened with closure. Salinas, Steinbeck's hometown, made national news with that story. Support groups have rallied, supplemental sales tax passed, and the libraries are safe... for now. Thanks for visiting my illustration. Good eye; though I was not consciously depicting this part of California, I guess it came through.

Happy Thanksgiving. I love the art - keep it up. It's about expressing yourself, not where the image/feeling was before you took control of it.

Robert Anton Wilson talked about something called the SNAFU principle of communication. Basically, the only way there can be communication is between equals. The people on top (government, parent, boss) will ALWAYS withold information from the people below them, while the people below will ALWAYS only tell the people above them what they think the people above them want to hear.

Lovely pictures! BTW, you asked about the German children's authors at my son's school and I finally dug out their names: Regina Rusch read to the girls and Rudolf Gigler to the boys. If you put their names in at www.amazon.de their books will come up.

I've been reading through these comments and thinking about the "start from scratch" versus "alter something existing" question and I for one, find it "easier" to alter something existing. It's like - give me someone's idea and I'll just explode with new ideas. Give me a blank sheet of paper and my own creativity is seriously lacking.

A bit of a personal expose, but hopefully on-topic enough :)

I love the gull. Great take on "free".

Chris.

Oh - PS - that's why I find so many IF contributions truly amazing - because here are all these people pouring out creativity from scratch! (not that that's *better* - but it *is* something I can't do very well!)
