Although I was disheartened by last Fall's elections, I must say that in spite of wars, Live8, poverty and various other problems of varying magnitude, I was very grateful yesterday to know that I was (relatively) free. Free to be me. Free to think and say what I like. Free to live where and with whom I want to. What better symbol to citizens of the US to represent that gratitude than the Stars and Stripes. The symbolism of the Lone Star State is will have to wait for another day.
