DH and I celebrated his promotion (!) and raise (!!!) by taking a day trip to beautiful downtown Wylie, Texas. There's nothing like a turn of the century town that has been revived a bit to make one happy. The people had old fashioned charm and manners, and the pace was calm and measured. There were tea shoppes galore, some "stuff" stores, a country western review/theater, and, um, a Verizon super store.

This house is one that caught my eye. It has been beautifully restored and generously landscaped. There were gazebos on both sides of the house... and an updated swimming pool. Sweet tea on the porch would be a just the thing.

This one has probably had just as much work done, though I confess the colors don't appeal to me as much. The turret and cupola and spindles on the porch seem whimsical for a Texan!

Above the restored businesses were stained glass clerestory windows. I assume they are original. It surprised me that there were grapes (I was thinking California, vineyards and wine), until I remembered that there are lots of "fruit of the vine" verses in scripture. Or, maybe Wylie's big Baptist Church didn't evangelize ALL of the townspeople!

This store has branches in Plano! (much closer to home.) The woman who was running it said her daughter and son-in-law made the settees and counches for retailers, and she retails them directly to the public. The workmanship was fine and very creative.

Here's a detail of the front door.
