I don't know that the kit is necessary, but the gallery there is quite inspiring. I suppose to have a successful marketing plan (and by golly they are pushing one!!), rules and complications (not to mention product and classes are de rigeur. I think if you stick to a particular size and a reliable pen, you'll be fine!.
Mine are big: more or less the size of my sketch book... the WHOLE page, and done with a fine retractable fountain pen. Zentangle does little squares with micron pens.
DH gifted me with Photoshop CS2 post Christmas after Windows got so tangled that CS 1 didn't know what to do any more. So, of course, I had to color them!
