I only intended to draw the hydrant closest to the house. But then a Robin practically came up and introduced himself to me. And then I was so enjoying being in the front yard, I drew the next most interesting thing I could find: our ever expanding violet crop!
Hydrant.I have a friend who is a fire fighter. She also has medaled internationally in power lifting competition. She spends more of her time on ambulance duty than on the fire truck. She seems to think that putting out fires is no big deal; doing chest compressiions, administering epinephrin, or trying to resuscitate an infant -- those are big deals.
Bird (Turdus migratorius) I'm no competition for Audubon or any nature illustrator. But this Robin was so forward, calm and serene while looking for dinner, that I had more time than usual to try and capture his general shape and colors. Consider this an Avian gesture drawing. The pose was about 45 seconds... and I filled in as best as I could from memory.
Foliage (viola palmata, the State Flower of Rhode Island since 1968)My husband wants to "Round Up" the happy crop of innocent violets in the shade in front of the house. But I like them! Their heart shaped leaves, and modest purple flowers.
I have a friend who is having a "major" birthday this weekend. I'm going to print this and frame it for her.
Violets symbolize modesty, but also humility, and were favored among the ancient Romans who imbued them with the symbol of faithfulness.

These are wonderful. I love the ink and washes and especially the slight stylized images. Great!
Wonderful posts, and I think the framed violet sketch will Rock your friend ! (and I love free scattered violets too- why do husbands always hate that?)
Lovely gift for your friend. I'm sure she'll treasure it. (Just like I do "Lambie") Your style is wonderful. I wouldn't change a thing. Are you still scanning in your sketches and coloring them on Photoshop?
what a beautiful fire hydrant...the others are also lovely...what is it with guys and roundup?!
I like the hydrant illustration, and the robin. The robin has a kind of geometric structure which stylizes it in a very attractive way. Like the bird is stretching taller to see beyond its normal field of vision. The violets are cool too. I like the background wash(es). And on your other post, the Turner exhibit sounds like interesting fun (in fact, I may even be able to catch it in New York) -BTW love your sketches. Very nice!
Beautiful work! Wondering what you used for color? Doesn't quite look like watercolors. I also love violets...what a great gift for your friend!
These are great drawings. I love your style. Also love the background to the violets.
Violets are not weeds. They are reminders that small things are beautiful.
beautiful drawings!!
great work:)
Lovely little vignettes.Tell your DH that violets make the best use of what would normally be bare ground. Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog. About the wines, we just happen to be rather pernickity about our wines! we live in a wine growing area so tend to feel that ours are best!We probably didnt get to try the better ones.
These re great, they would make wonderful cards
