Today DH and I walked around Old Downtown Plano. We hadn't walked around there since summer, and were only slightly optimistic because at that time, the area was dead, dead, dead. But the day was SO gorgeous, and I'd had a nice invitation to a previous exhibit at the ArtCenter of Plano.
If you are at ALL interested in fiber arts, you really should stop by. The current exhibit (through March 1) is "New Horizons in Fiber 2008." There are over 80 works by Dallas Area Fiber Artists and they are amazing. If you go to their website you can see all of them.
Below are some of the pix I took with my reactions.
This was described as "thread painting." It is some sort of embroidery. The actual size was about 9 x 12, maybe a bit bigger. It really does look like the hills of Texas. And the work was very fine.
This was fascinating because the fiber part of the work was attached/glued to paper which had been painted with acrylic or oil paint. I wouldn't have thought of mixed media with fabric and paint. And some of the fabric looked as if it had been quilted, machine embroidered and perhaps hand-dyed.
A joyful quilted piece. At first I didn't see the figure... I only saw the colors and shapes. (Sometimes it's best to stand a few feet back! It was about 5 x 2 FEET. Lots of work.
I LOVE THIS PIECE. The colors are amazing and the photograph isn't quite true to the shades. The blue slubbed silk backing has been embroidered extravagantly with reds, oranges and shocking pinks. I may paint something based on these colors. YUMMY.
This was DH's favorite, I think. (He's a sucker for flowers!) Quilted, digitized, dyed and painted squares on silk.

Wonderful art work. I didn't see the figure either, until you pointed it out. I love art like that. Every time you look at it you see something new.
It just occured to me that YEARS ago I think I visited Plano. We were visiting friends in Richarson. I remember being blown away by the fact that everyone seemed to have both pool and fireplace. Gotta love that! :-)
